Lead-based Paint: Do Your Windows Have It?

Monday, November 10th, 2014

Lead paint can be hazardous to childrenLead is very common – and very dangerous – material used in a variety of industries, which is why it tends to turn up in soil, air and water as a toxic byproduct of such activity. It’s also widely used in products ranging from car batteries to paint. You may have lead-based paint on various items in your household right now, including your window frames. If that turns out to be the case, you might need to get the lead out, so to speak.

Some homes built before 1978 (and almost all homes built before 1950) were decorated with lead-based paint, from the walls and furniture to the windows. As the lead ages, it cracks, chips, and peels away, making it a fascinating plaything for curious children. Lead is particularly harmful to children because it impairs brain and nerve development, causing physical, mental and behavioral problems. To make matters worse, lead has an oddly sweet taste, encouraging kids to eat it. So if you have a child in the home, you might need to get your household paint tested for lead, if only for your peace of mind.

If your home does have lead-based paint in it, you need to take some special precautions when it’s time to renovate or remodel. It isn’s as simple as taking a sander to the paint, because the lead dust released into the air can be harmful. But don’t let this issue stop you from ordering replacement windows from Zen Windows Austin.
